Dear _____________________ , How can we get to know each other, if I do not even know how to spell your name? I am Alejandro Virgos, a thinker that works at the intersection of art and design. My body of work studies both the body and the identity through the research of how material objects and its visual representation construct and shape the perception of them in relation to the other. Thus, I explore the space in between opposite concepts such as the old versus the new, the real versus the unreal, the seen versus the unseen, the instinct versus the knowledge. Putting into manifest the relevance of the grey spectrum, of the unusual, the abstract, the unknown: a flux of opposites that aims to compliment and blend to elevate the ordinary through nature and instinct, lead by knowledge. The main fields I am most drawn to are sociology, anthropology, politics, history and semiotic. Also, I hold a special interest in how new technologies and digital creation influence old processes and how these can be combined to create new methodologies, so as to enhance the crafts to new levels of mastery. My approach is subtle, minimal and focuses on the small nuances that hover in between the extremes, altering the physicality of the bodies and objects in a soft tailored architecture. My university degree in design at BAU School of Design in Barcelona, specializing in fashion, made me question what was to be a man in relation to clothes. This then has evolved and gone further, questioning, what does it mean to be a human? Do objects of fashion create the notion of gender?, How can we disrupt it and create new perspectives? During my masters degree at The Royal College of Art London, I developed my own methodology, studying the body, combining technology such the use of 3D Printing, mould making and 3D modeling software. Through the use of artisanal techniques and the mastery of the line, cut and shape, I aspire to disguise the perception of our bodies and subvert the old way of making, questioning the accurate fit and wondering what will be the role of the body in the future’s fashion construction. “Fashion has always focused on the breasts, the hips, the waist; I wanted to focused on the forearm, the calf, the knee, all the body traits that define us. Outlining what we share rather what we do not.” My aim is to disrupt the outdated, the limiting, embrace the unknown; to create a space to think and focus. A deleted character that is seen white. I do not want to be classified only as a fashion designer, I would like to take what I know about fashion and use it to influence and create no matter the field. I would like to be seen as a thinker, a human that can move from one place to the other and yet, remain true, shift, hover, drift. “It is like creating a live sculptured body that it is painted on a clothed screen seeking to be felt by a material idea than can not be seen nor touched.“
